Local man sentenced to 40 years after conviction for violent crimes
On August 27-28, 2019, Judge Marcus Hunter conducted a bench trial in the matter of State of Louisiana v. David Arthur Smith. The Defendant was charged with three counts of Attempted Second Degree Murder, 1 count of Second Degree Robbery, 1 count of Carjacking, 1 count of Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property, and 1 count of Armed Robbery. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Shirley Wilson Davis. The Defendant was represented by Attorney Dion Young. After the two day bench trial, Judge Hunter found the Defendant guilty as charged of 2 counts of Attempted Second Degree Murder, 1 count of the responsive charge of Aggravated Battery, and guilty as charged of all remaining counts.
Sentencing on this matter was held on November 7, 2019. On that date, Judge Hunter sentenced the defendant to a total of 40 years, with 35 years to be served at hard labor. The Defendant was further ordered to make restitution to the victims up to the amount of $25,000.
